Why do opioids cause constipation and digestion problems? Shouldn't opioids, as a parasympathetic nervous system activator, cause digestion to increase?

>body acclimates itself to increased digestion from opiod use and lowers it's own production
>stop using opiods (go to bed)
>withdrawals (wake up in the morning)
>body producing critically low digestion signals
>do more opioids
>digestion "normal"

What? Opioids are a CNS depressor, so obviously they're gonna cause constipation.

Ah, that makes sense. Thank you.

Sympathetic nervous system activation causes decreased digestion, and vice-versa. There are only two states your nervous system can be in, you can't have neither.

Basically, unless inhibited, digestion will occur. And sympathetic nervous system activation is what inhibits digestion.
