I understand trying to nail down what the minimum building blocks of existence are, that makes sense. And I understand how you'd think water is one, and maybe air and fire. But surely you can just look at earth and see it's made of many different little bits, right? And that there are multiple types of metal and wood? I don't see how you could reach the conclusion that any of those are a minimum building block.

Imagine living in a time where the greatest thinkers had no idea how reality worked.
If some guy was eloquent enough, he could convince people he was God or a prophet or something and knew things and people followed him.
Now imagine some guy says "everything is made of spirit (air), water, fire, and earth." and you can't think of anything not made of those things. That's about as far as scientific inquiry went for 99% of people.
