Why does the west refuse to appreciate go. Chess is overrated af! I've yet to find a scientific reason why humans play this meh game over the universal game of go.

Games are more fun when you have different types of pieces that move in different ways. Simple. As. Leave the (even more) autistic bean-counting to the soft asian boys.

you are right. The pieces and the look is such a factor. I also thought the needing to count to score the game at the end is hard for Americans

I feel ya, bro.

I only heard from Go after a decade of chess. Thought „well, let’s try this“ and got addicted. Never looked back either, chess is fun and everything, but the simplicity and tactical possibilities of Go are just so damn awesome.

Plus you can play with EVERY person, even if you‘re up against a child you can just give him enough stones advantage and at some point you WILL lose or at least have a hell of a fight to win..

And also it translates much better to „real“ warfare than chess. Sometimes you think: „oh shit, do I help those poor dudes or launch a full scale attack?“

You can play defensively or sneaky, you can play for small territories or big territories, you can cut his troops off.. and laying traps is just such a huge topic. If you misread a situation and play too confidently, you might just loose your main army.

And much more.

I play go somewhat regularly and am into it. The main problem for most people is Go is considerably more abstract than chess in the sense that most games like checkers, chess, Shogi, etc. are predominantly about piece capture where Go is about ascertaining territory (but you can still capture pieces towards points in Go). Also, the pieces in other "chess like" games are more relatable to the average person where black and white stones are much more "abstract". Also territory scoring somewhat varies depending on rules and other things like whether a specific string of stones is dead or alive is not always clear even to people who have played a dozen games or so. I think it's possible to get westerners in to go, but they have to want it and most people seem to just fall back to chess.

>Deterministic 1v1 game
Boring and not intellectually stimulating. I only play games where luck, shitty teammates, and physical skill play a role in victory. Go, chess, and checkers are all the same in the sense that you memorize a few key ideas and try your best to look 10 moves ahead. If you're good enough to make money at it, good for you, but I find it hard to justify dedicating so much timeXenergy to a trivial pursuit. Maybe try the stock market if you're so smart?

There's a lot of reasons OP.
Games take too long, especially when people know what they are doing.

The pieces are pretty boring.Unless you're a big fan of looking at raw data and understanding the beauty of the pieces slowly filling up the board it's hard to really sit and watch compared to chess that has Knights and castles and kings and queens and the pieces fall down and there's a cool clock people speed run games on in the park. Go just doesn't have that flair to it.

requires high IQ to really appreciate the abstraction and moves; the bar for entry is just lower with chess so it's easier to get into and you're much more quickly rewarded for getting better.

Why does Go need to be appreciated by other cultures? If it's popular by its own people, then great. Do you need attention from other people?

Only reason is cultural inertia. No one plays it in the West, and no one will play it going forward because video games and porn exist. Also chess.
I agree it's objectively far superior to chess. Shogi too.

The goal is very simple. You surround more area on the board with your pieces and you win. Equivalently, it's a game where two players take turns placing pieces on the board and the player who can place more pieces, wins.

Anonymous No. 16307413

>>16307407
Its "simple" in that you surround it. But on a 19x19, the scale is endless to the point that there's no direction or scope. And people dont generally try to do 1v1 in a 3x3 arena right from the get go. The manageable scope only comes into play at the end game, before that its all big abstract plays.

In Asia, Go is mostly played by old people now. Japanese prefer Shoji and China has their own chess style game. Unfortunately Go is never going to become even remotely popular in the West aside from an aesthetic prop to put in movies. https://forums.online-go.com/t/playing-go-in-movies-and-tv-shows-pictures/13026/11

Also, not related to math and science.
