๐Ÿงต Any entomologists on here?

Anyone recognize what these are? I found about 7 of them climbing up the trunk of my new eucalyptus tree sapling. Geographically, I'm in a green LA suburb.

They are about 5 mm long. Are they harmless caterpillars or are they some kind of pest that will harm my lovely tree?

They're nature's gummy worms. Take a bite.

you know it's a grub, right? Who cares what it turns into probably a beetle.

my main concern is, will it harm my tree? some of the leaves look chewed already, i don't know if these little guys are the culprit

the only time i ran into grubs that look exactly like that is cutting into a living tree and finding them living inside eating the wood. They probably chew wood not leaves.

Larvae need to eat a lot, it's either eating or looking for food. The trunk of a young sapling is pretty resistant and if it doesn't have any obvious damage then they are probably just looking for leaves to eat which would harm the tree if they clear it out.

Look similar to sawfly larvae. Do they cluster?

Some type of eucalyptus leaf beetle

Anonymous No. 16303412

thanks guys, but /out/ was able to identify it: its a 'dotted leaf beetle' an invasive species from australia that has shown up in cali over the last few years. yes, they are munching on the leaves too, so i'm going to try and find some insecticide that isn't insanely toxic. any suggestions?

Well it's a eucalyptus pest, iirc there's some horticulture that can be done that will allow them to fight off the beetles and their larvae.
