๐Ÿงต In what decade did biology careers begin?

Anonymous No. 16305028

I was searching and I found that the majority of universities in the Hispanic world, such as in Chile, Mexico and Spain, began with biology courses in the '70s of the last century.
But what about the rest of the world? When did biologists start calling themselves biologists?

For example, I know that the term "Biology" was coined in 1802, but that when Darwin published his results in 1858 with Wallace, both were considered simply naturalists. Ernst Mayr, who already considered himself a biologist and who was born in 1904, qualified as a biologist? What happened between 1859 and 1920? At what point did universities have biology careers and when did these scientists start calling themselves biologists?
