How do you deal with the boredom that comes from studying one thing for too long? I got my undergrad degree in astrophysics, and I’m just finishing up my masters in oceanography. I’ve discovered that after a few years, no matter what I am studying, I will inevitably grow tired of learning increasingly granular things about it and will want to move on to something else. I’m at the point where I don’t want to involve myself with the subject of my master’s thesis in a professional setting, because I’m frankly bored of it. It confounds me how so many scientists can spend decades studying the same thing and not get sick of it. It also worries me because specialization is held in such high regard in scientific fields, while it feels like I’m just chasing the novelty of it all. There is not one single thing I could ever imagine myself being happy studying for the majority of my life. Being able to change things up every few years seems to be the point of an interesting life to me.
