I really don't see where you would have drawn the connection between the current state of the sciences and the essay presented.
Science and academia certainly have an overrepresentation of upper classes, but they are more accessible to the lower classes than probably ever before in history. The guy who wrote that essay is a good example.
The entire essay also reads to me like this was a low-class person who got to Yale, realized that this fact got people to listen to him without his peers being able to challenge him and then he made that his entire profile. Much like how the only articles in Physics World written by women or minorities were about what it's like to be a woman or minority in physics. I kind of get it but do not really respect it.
