dunning kruger effect often gets invoked inappropriately, but I think if I had to simplify it so it's easier to use correctly, I'd say it's when you have answered all of your own questions, falsely believe there are no more questions left, and thus believe you have completely mastered something.

String Theory is no different from Quantum Field Theory in that you can build infinite models.

The problem is that for any model in String Theory, it should agree with known physics in the appropriate limits. But we are unable to experimentally probe the limits in which it would differ from known physics. So there is no way to verify models.

Kelvin was right, Quantum Mechanics is just replacing determinative Newtonian mechanics with statistical methods, a process which had already been begun by statistical mechanics in Kelvin’s time. The reason we use statistical methods is that our measurement have become precise enough that we can measure the error of Newtonian theory. So Quantum Mechanics isn’t really new, it’s just a more precise version of what already existed. Same with Einstein. Einstein is not really different, all he did was find some differential equations that match our superior measurements of light. Only physics cultists think that that is somehow profound. It’s not any kind of insight into reality, it’s just updating some equations to fit better data. But physics is a cult and people only study physics because they believe they are learning something about “reality.” This mistaken ideology has spawned useless masses of theoretical physicists who accomplish literally nothing, and the experimental physicists can no longer make any process without spending 50 billion on a bigger collider and a bigger telescope.
