Ancient pharaohs were buried in mastabas, which are rectangularly stacked, shorter tombs. People like Djoser and Imhotep realized they can build larger structures by having the rectangles higher be smaller, creating a step pyramid. Then ambitious pharaohs like Sneferu and Khufu built the first triangle pyramids, which coincidentally happen to be the largest ones.
