Getting a hair transplant tomorrow so I'd like to discuss hair loss with anons. Let's talk about promising scientific research in the field of hair cloning (forever 10 years away), complain about the best treatments being 30 year old drugs that can have serious side effects, and discuss transplant techniques and all other forms of treatment.

The transplant I am getting will be the FUE method. pic related is not me btw.

I once contemplated this operation, but tried minoxidil, castor oil, teatree oil, and a red light helmet. They were effective enough in combination to at least kick that can down the road another decade or so.

I don't feel like having a complicated hair routine so I decided to just do transplant + topical finasteride once a day. I tried minox before but it gave me headaches. I may get a red light helmet after the transplant at some point though since it doesn't seem hard to incorporate in to my day.

DIY hair transplant operations are a retarded idea, but the J00B00Ber is wrong that you can't extract hairs from the back of your own neck. I've pulled out a few ingrowns there just using some nail clippers, three mirrors, and decent flexibility.

You misunderstand what extraction is. He isn't talking about plucking hairs which you can obviously do with a mirror. He's talking about pulling the hair follicle itself, which is entirely different than tweezing hairs.

Does that derma roller or some shit with micro needle work?

I had a transplant over a year ago and it went great. Been on a topical fin/min daily since then.
I briefly tried oral Fin but I had awful side effects. Fortunately those went away within a few days of stopping and I haven't had issues with the topical stuff.

The most serious side-effect of fin and min is that they just don't work. The befores/afters in research studies are completely underwhelming, which is probably why people post befores/afters from sites trying to peddle shit.

Dermaneedling or dermrolling has been shown increase hair count when used with minoxidil. However if you are balding you need to lower your DHT levels with finasteride or dutasteride otherwise you will lose your hair regardless.

What's your percentage of fin/min per ml applied? I.e. are you doing 1%fin/5%min?

If minoxidil gives you headaches apply a lower dose or less frequently.

He did get a transplant. The topical he uses is to maintain his hair.

Selenium, zinc and B-vitamin deficiencies are responsible for a lot of hair loss on top of androgenic alopecia.

>If you are losing hair, do not automatically assume it is an androgen problem alone; run some blood tests and supplement appropriately.

Well, hair loss meta is pretty simple right now.

Minoxidil stimulates growth, but the results vary greatly, and the increased growth usually won't keep up with the loss rate on its own, and you have to keep taking it for life to keep the results. On the positive side, it's an over the counter drug with little to no side effects, so it's a good thing to start with. Keep in mind there has been a study that it's VERY TOXIC TO CATS, so if you have them, take great care not to spill it, was your hands/comb/hairbrush/etc. and don't let them lick your hair for at least a few hours after application.

Finasteride does not stimulate growth, it merely stops further loss, it will preserve whatever hairline you have when you start taking it, and you also have to keep taking it for life. Fin + min is standard combo. Unlike min, fin can have serious side effects (erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, depression and more) but they're uncommon.

Dutasteride is basically fin but stronger, with a higher risk of side effects and them lasting longer. It's not FDA approved for hair loss so it's harder to get in US, but it is approved in places like Japan or South Korea. Generally there's no reason to try it if fin works, but if it doesn't, it's an option.

Transplants are nice, low failure rate, only downsides are it's expensive and you will most likely be stuck using fin.

Also, I saw some talk about using deoxyribose sugar for hair growth, apparently it's about as effective as min, but it's still too early to tell for sure. Here's the study I found:

Bryan stopped blood tranfusions a long time ago now, because he didn't notice any benefits.

this is irrelevant to the topic, which is hair regrowth

Attaching a picture of a man known for blood transfusions holding a vial of blood while saying "look what this man is doing to keep his hairline" can give people the idea that he is doing them for hair growth. Clearing this up is relevant, ESL Anon.

No, it's not. You just didn't know that he did many other procedures besides blood transfusions. It was also already mentioned in a reply that he is using a topical treatment.

Unless you fix the reason why you are losing hair in thei first place it will not gorw in properly. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

OP here. I got the transplant. Doctor and his team did a phenomenal job. I was able to sleep through 90% of the procedure, and there was nearly no pain at all outside the initial numbing.

It's been almost a full day since the procedure and I have not taken any pain meds despite being prescribed them. The nurse also told me I should take ibuprofen every 8 hours and I don't even feel I need to do that, but I did it just because she was very adamant about not waiting to have pain before taking the meds, said she didn't want me chasing the pain with pain meds and to be pre-emptive.

All in all, procedure was way easier than I thought it'd be, now I just have to see if the results are good which I'll start to see ~6 months from now.

The problem with hair loss discussions are the rampant misinformation of treatment efficacy, poor quality studies being cited by fearmongers that aim to justify their fears, and misrepresentation of data.

Medications that are proven to STOP hairloss: Finasteride & Dutasteride

Medications proven to aid in regrowth: Minoxidil, Diazoxide (rarely used), & Pinacidil (rarely used).

Supplements: Be serious lol -- as relieving as it'd be to find out your hair loss is caused by some nutritional deficiency, that will not be the case. You are not an exception.

Misc: Derma rollers don't work on their own, and more than likely won't work when used alongside solutions like minoxidil; however, doesn't hurt to try.

Essential Oils: Stop being stupid.

Side Effects: Finasteride has an extremely low side effect profile; ED (everyone's main concern) occurs in 1-3% of people, with side effects eventually subsiding with continued/discontinued use. Dutasteride, a 5ar-inhibitor 3x more potent than Fin at reducing type 1 5α-reductase and 100x more potent at inhibiting type II 5α-reductase, has a LOWER incidence rate of sexual dysfunction compared to Finasteride. Neither Finasteride nor Dutasteride lower total serum testosterone levels; most people will see a 10-25% increase in serum T levels. Most remain above baseline during treatment. Finasteride & Dutasteride can cause shedding, if you experience shedding that means the drug is WORKING and you get the added bonus of REGROWTH. DO NOT EXPECT SHEDDING/REGROWTH WHILE ONLY USING FIN/DUT IF YOUR HAIR HAS THINNED SIGNIFICANTLY (more than 50% of its original volume lost). Shedding can last for months and will occur more than once over the course of a couple of years -- out with the old, in with the new.

Stop browsing subreddits filled with baboon brained hypochondriacs who spread made-up horror stories (tressless). You will give yourself a nocebo effect

Lastly, Haircafe (Kevin) is a great source of information.
