This can cause a rushing or whooshing noise, known as "occlusion effect," where external sounds are blocked and internal sounds become more noticeable.

I'm a sensitive to sounds and I often use earplugs to sleep. Sometimes I hear what sounds kind of like a modem or other electronic signal. My best guess is that a small cavity or layer of fluid created by the earplug acts as a cavity/resonator and picks up wifi or other signals. I'm totally not hallucinating.
