The entire basis of the movie is fucking stupid.

There's also the issue of how Mars' soil is toxic and you can't grow plants in it, but this is forgivable, it wasn't known yet when the movie was made.
Otherwise the science is pretty good. At least they tried to be accurate most of the time, unlike a lot of other junk in the genre

What I hated most about this movie was how much resources were expended to rescue him. It's like the fallout from the Columbia disaster were we axed man space flight as being too dangerous. It should have been about a man dying on Mars, but urging people to keep exploring and pushing the boundaries, ending with a habitat dome named after him on Mars.

Force is pressure difference times area. One atmosphere is 100,000 Pa and the area is about 3 meters squared. Multiplying these gives a force of about 67 thousand pounds. Think you could support a Mac truck on some clear plastic with a few criss-crossings of duct tape?
