Since we evolved from hairy apes towards hairless upright walking and sweating homo, and hair could be regarded as atavism, how come socially we put so much importance on hair? Hair has no inherent function to us yet in nearly every culture going bald is a death sentence to the male's procreation prospects.

If you believe my crank theory, then there's also a slight possibility that it increases our ability to pick up electromagnetic signals from the environment.
These are emitted by various plants and change drastically depending on the health of the ecosystem.
