How are they only figuring this out just now? The sphygmomanometer has been in use since the 1800s.
How was it misused for over a century and a quarter without anyone noticing? Are doctors and medical science really that lackadaisical and unobservant?

Idk but I always noticed doctors in my country at least couldn't care less about your positioning when they wrap the lancet around my arm. They do not even require to take the shirt off they just take the reading through the clothes...

how is this news? i remember when i first got an at-home blood pressure cuff 20 years ago, this kind of info was readily available. a more interesting recent development is that your pressure while lying down is more predictive of cardiac events
