Whenever we look at a star in the night sky, is it actually in that position or is somewhere else since the light took thousands of years to reach us?

The number of stars you can see with the naked eye depends on the conditions, but you can generally see stars up to about 16,000 light years away:
Ideal conditions
In ideal conditions, like complete darkness, no clouds, no Moon, and full-sky viewing, you can see just over 9,000 stars. All of these stars are within our own galaxy, and some are thousands of light years away.
Most stars are within 1,000 light years
Most of the stars you can see with the naked eye are within 1,000 light years of us.

>is it actually in that position
YOu can never know this as the light takes too long to reach us. For all you know 100,000 years ago aliens blew up that star and it'll take 100,000 years for us to see the explosion and subsequent winking out of the star. Hence you can never now the CURRENT state of anything outside the Sol System due to time lag.
You are worse than a blind man in a deep cave chasing shadows on the wall to help you determine what the world is like, anyone who says otherwise is a fucking faggot retard.
