The median number of planets for a star in the Milky Way appears to be around one. Why so few?

We changed the way we define "Planet". Used to be that everything, including dogs, could be planets. That didn't make any sense to anyone, so it was changed. Now the dog has to be spherical and have cleared its local orbital space. HTH
