Computer science is science (mind blowing I know)
So why can't we have a /cs/ general?

actual honest to god computer science has nothing to do with computers or science.
it's pure math.
most CS programs are really software engineering programs

We tried but there isn't enough demand. We have maybe 2 anons who know something about cryptography and maybe 1 or 2 guys who care about complexity theory. The rest would just be pajeets asking for help with their first semester homework and then the general dies with less than 100 replies.

Its not /sci/ because its not an elite subject. Anyone can learn programming by watching youtube videos and searching documentation. If you want to work on a codebase, ask someone to give you guidance. The barrier to entry is low and the work is not hard.
CS is a bitch subject compared to physics or engineering.

The problem is that most CS grads only have a bachelor's. They never bothered to pursue further study and went straight into the workforce. They wouldn't contribute anything meaningful to a CS general thread besides talking endlessly about coding and job hunting.

it may have been a senior level class, it's been a while.
it was just strange that such a brutal class was left until kiddies had finished most of their "CS" education. felt like a weed out class right before graduation.
>>16422384
it's fascinating. it's a deep mathematical subject that helps elucidate what is even possible with out math (turns out we can access almost nothing in the huge weird world of math), and helps work out when algorithms are tractable or not. learning about different classes of abstract machines and their correspondence to is also useful for designing programs, such as finite state automata. also, it lays the foundation for learning about programming language design and implementation. be warned, it's intellectually challenging.

I had 3 classes on theory of computation, one class on formal logic, 3 classes on mathematics. We also had a class on compilers where we applied context free grammars etc. I would say my CS program was mostly theoretical, we had one class on Scheme and Java and then another on C, C++ and x86 assembly and then it was just assumed you knew how to program (we had a more abstract software design class though)
