The collapse of institutional trust isn't limited to science and is much older than 2016, but 2016 was the year that all institutions decided to spend whatever remaining credibility they had to push deranged lefty fear porn. Trust spiked among the left because they were being told what they wanted to hear, but cratered to near zero from the right. Independents mostly followed the right and now even the left is on the decline. The situation is probably unrecoverable and it will be interesting to see what happens next.

Because certain people's money is tied into things which are dangerous and unhealthy so they need to deny science in order to keep earning money. So they fund anti-science think tanks to get people to distrust science. As you can see from the responses in this thread, it's working.

And modern governments routinely persecute people for holding heretical views (that later prove to be correct). Imprisoning dissidents isn't something you do when your ideas are winning.

Two reasons for that:
1. The West is collapsing and people in power positions know that
2. Money.
It's everyone's exit strategy currently. Since there's no more national spirit left and society is divided, people try to maximize what they can get out of the system to love comfy lives and prepare for the coming collapse.

Modern Science and Technology are both uniquely Western phenomena, and now that western society is in gutter, the related institutions are getting hollowed out, people no longer trust each other, it isn't shocking that they no longer trust the parasitic institutions.
