Kava is shit, not only does it definitely increase cancer risk and liver damage (cyp1a1 induction)
It produces an intoxication that drives users to drink it excessively but won’t produce the disinhibition you obtain from alcohol.
I have experienced- hangovers, withdrawal and double vision from kava

depends on how close you want/need the effects to be, and what kind of toxicities youre okay with, and if the taste matters at all
but for example tert-amyl alcohol is has very similar to ethanol but without any aldehyde or ketone metabolite. acetaldehyde is largely responsible for ethanols hepatotoxicity, carcinogenicity, and hangover
there is no physically warming sensation (thats also the acetaldehyde) and it has a slower onset and longer duration.
tert amyl alcohol is very potent and probably doesnt make you throw up as easily, having it in a concentrated form, with its disinhibiting effects seems more likely to end with respiratory depression and death than with ethanol. probably about equally addictive
other candidates could be ethylpentynol, GHB, benzodiazepines, methaqualone, phenibut, pregabalin, ketamine. or maybe a combination of ketamine or some other NMDA antagonist with one of the GABAergics

made a typo, i meant methylpentynol, but ethylpentynol also exists and has similar effects, and there are a couple more similar drugs with a "simple alcohol" structure like prenderol, 1-ethynylcyclohexanol, and 3-methyl-3-pentanol
