The problem with theoretical physicists atm is that they have nothing else to do but twiddle their thumbs. They have always relied on experimentalists to find new, unexplained phenomena they have to explain but there hasn't been anything new discovered in decades. So they get bored and come up with nonsense theories that are based on no empirical evidence.

Add the fact that as a scientist, you are not getting in a top institute based on your actual intellect and love for research, you get in because youre some asian american adjacent demographic whose parents have pushed to tick boxes on their resume from a very young age. Youre not at harvard because the only place to do great science is harvard, you are at harvard because itll be good for your career. Then, you are not getting published if your research doesnt provide positive results because tens of thousands of people are engaged in a PhD, which used to be a degree reserved to the intellectual elite.
