Riddle me this, cosmologists. Inflation is described a second-order phase transition in Guth’s original paper. This means it needs a scalar field. The Higgs’ vev is too small to account for the inflation rate. Guth coped with this by saying there might be due to a GUT symmetry braking. This was of course before the simplest GUTs were ruled out by setting bounds on proton decay. So the million dollar question is: why is inflation universally accepted in the field if we have no evidence of that scalar field nor a satisfactory particle physics model to include it?

Because it fits the data

What fits the data? The non-existent scalar field? A fairy sprinkling some viagra on the universe also fits the data.

You are confusing together two separate ideas. One is the idea that the very early universe underwent a period of exponential expansion. The other is the explanation about why that happened. You are right there is a lack of empirical evidence which is why even though the general consensus agrees with the idea of inflation (it solves a lot of problems in a single idea), there is a lot more push back on the exact hypothetical cause.

Is there a way to come up with a falsifiable model for inflation (ie confirmed via unrelated phenomena) or do you think it’s just beyond our reach?

I think it's very possible. Like most things in cosmology it goes hand-in-hand with better experimental observations - but that means news technology and telescopes. Those tend to be slow, multi-decade long upgrades which in the mean time leaves all the theorists stuck in a room with nothing to do except stick their thumbs up their ass.

What kind of observations would support inflation theory besides the direct observation via microwave background radiation?

Cosmologists, I'd like to speak in code so much and so obsessively over their work communications with their bosses, the end of shift reports...
This may contribute to some of the reason for the NASA guys in biosphere guys. All I like to get together and a nice ritual.
These intergroup communications
Result in sharing and and transactions and trading. However, the setting maybe different and seem odd on a superficial perception.

Who knows, often these kind of things are found in the last place you would expect. But yes, most accurate measurements of the CMB and BAO would be a good place to start.

listen all I'm saying is that if godel can have an incompleteness theorem maybe we'll find one for physics

It's 4:40 here in the East Coast U. S, so basically, I'm 20 minutes away from it uplifting experience. You know, my work day is not 9 to 5, but I'm just saying at 420 boo bro oh boo, if it's Halloween 420 boo, that's pretty hot. Where's the women? I said Halloween, not with me, but I would have run with the women concept because I'm not bound by commitment and consistency, however, if I wanted to wrap with consistency, then I would use constringency, and I'm too f****** lazy right now. That's who stowed my dog is up here on the bed with me. I still have my shoes on. I'm going to bed with my shoes. On the exhibit. Edge of the bed, so I'm not going to look up the v number right now, v. Hyphen number I give up
