It is entertainment first and foremost. A form of aesthetic experience. But I do not believe any AI slop is capable of proving mathematical statements. ML needs training data. What data is there for the Riemann hypothesis? All the wrong proofs? If Ted was referring to applied math, then it's a joke of a field anyways.

those new AIs excel at two things: Physics and Math. You are better off studying plumbing

Since when? That's what everyone actually thought BEFORE the current gen of LLMs and Image generators.
Now it's evident that they're absolute utter shit at reasoning.
Maybe new paradigms will eventually result in that not being the case, but either way it's clear that mass produced art is the first thing being usurped and math will come much later, if ever.

There have been ML theorem provers, but they cap at IMO level problems. They can't do more specialized math because they don't have enough data on it. Also, a mathematics undergrad professor was tasked to rate o1 on it's knowledge of said undergrad classes, and he described it as having the overall reasoning steps, but struggling at individual ones, which imply a lack of actual underdstanding, but instead the memorization of the usual motions for those textbook problems.

He's wrong. You can still be payed to do pure math if you're good enough.
Had he not gone apshit and bombed people he would be a tenured professor at Berkely today (barring not dying of cancer) and could be publishing and being paid a liveable wage.

1. Entertainment is worthwhile. Entertainment is literally all that life is about.
2. Modern technology is epic and cool and promoting its progress is cool, as long as it's not for military purposes. Science and technology doesn't progress by itself. People are needed to do it.
3. Math is the safest career choice. If computers can do math they can do everything else as well.
Basically Ted Kaczynski (who was trans btw) was wrong about everything.
