humans know that going into the tin can will make them receave a million times the amount of radiation they'd usually receive on earth, dipshit, they just don't care since the travel time is short enough to not die

Unironically pure water solves many issues with deep space radiation. The water acts as a total shield for the rest of the ship usually via a dome of water at the bow in direction of travel. You can also build a sphere ala The Borg and have a complete envelope of water around the sphere. The water can also be cleaned of radiation and used for life support and recycled near infinity in a closed loop system. The issue is the weight of radiation shielding be it water or lead. The current ancient chemical rocket technology can not and will not be able to lift enough mass to create proper radiation shields. The issue, AS ALWAYS, is the bottleneck of getting raw materials in massive amounts into orbit for construction. We have everything we need and more to create the best longest lasting space craft.....we just have no way to levitate it off the surface of the Earth to counteract the Gravity Well of 9.8 m/s sucking you back down. Scientists know this and have for a long long time.

>To effectively block gamma radiation, a layer of water would need to be around 13.8 feet thick, as this is considered the necessary thickness to completely block typical gamma rays; this is due to the relatively low density of water

what propulsion would you suggest in a sphere engulfed in water?

Anonymous No. 16448797

>>16448727
In the near vacuum of space any propulsion is adequate for any mass really. It just effects acceleration speed not final total speed. Sphere is one of the most economical space ship shapes. Unlike planes or boats or things that must navigate a fluid medium the space ship just floats frictionless in the inky black. Interstellar propulsion isn't my main thing but Ideally some sort of nuclear powered reactor would run an ion engine of some type maybe paired with a Bussard collector to capture fuel on the go. The other ideal shape is a penis like dong ship with a semi shpere of water at the bow holding water or some other radiation/meteorite shield. Then the rest of the ship is in the shadow of the shield.

That's the other thing I forgot. Water makes an excellent self healing shield against incoming space dust and derbies which is a HUGE issue traveling at fractions of C. 1% of light speed is still very fast and space pebbles could pound through your ship like an atom bomb unless you have a shield. It's not just radiation out there to worry about.

I study deep space and the major issues of life support are often over looked or completely hand waved away. Even a trip to Mars could risk catastrophic ship explosion do to random bullshit floating around in space. The dangers and engineering problems to solve are way more than popular media lets on. Water however solves many of these issues.

But like I said the issue is lifting the mass off the Earth. Water weighs about 9 pounds a gallon. Some of the other major issues with living in space can be solved easily if not for gravity. Living soil could be lifted into orbit to grow crops but again the sheer mass of living soil which itself contains some water is insane. But a thriving garden on a space ship is one of the most efficient ways to recycle the air and clean toxins from it as well as provide food.

i think you are wrong. I guess we'd need to figure out how much water and/or lead would be required to adequately shield a specified spacecraft or parts thereof and differing levels of protection. We could assume the use of Starship and go from there.

While I applaud your child like enthusiasm I would be remiss if I didn't point out the balls would stick out past the radiation shield of the Dong Ship. We are always going to be traveling in the direction the head points so it catches our micro meteors and radiation. I've made a simple diagram to help. It's more of a dildo ship I suppose if we are splitting hairs. Red is the danger zone of the cock and balls where radiation will likely not be blocked and you'd have no protection.
