๐Ÿงต Good sources for learning about prions?

Anonymous No. 16450950

I'm a vet student and this is the subject that has been fascinating me for some time, in particular it's transmission and replication. Any good books on this subject?

Prions are so weird, we've genetically engineered mice to not produce prions, and the effects weren't substantial for overall quality of life
For some reason not producing prions increases your chance of developing some neurodegenerative disorders and makes you stupid on average, but their function neurologically isn't well understood, so maybe they're neuroprotective against diseases like Parkinson's
I don't know any good literature, but a lot of new studies coming out show there may be enzymatic methods to destroy prions studying how fungus deal with them, since apparently misfolded prions are more common in some species of fungi, and they've developed methods of destroying them

there is only 1 known prion disease in humans (animals too?), and people are still trying to understand what exactly is happening with that shit.
the best resource would be scientific papers.

You mean this article? Also, thanks to everyone replying to this thread, even schizo replies are welcome since at least one professor I asked what skeptical of misfolded protein actually being an infectious agent

Do look up purdey's work.
He was an organic farmer that was curious about the real cause of BSE in the UK and outraged at some of the policies they were trying to justify because of it, he concluded that the actual cause was an organophosphate insecticide called phosmet that the government had mandated as a way to control warbleflys was the cause. The entire notion of british beef somehow being dangerous was completely farcicle.

Ok, and did he have evidence or did he just conclude it?

I don't remember, but if you can find his writings anywhere then you will have an avenue to explore we he actually founf and documented.
There might be court documents too I vaguelly remember him bringing a legal case against the givernment.

I hink he said that prions were natural molecules and part of an energy transport chain but because they were having their copper ions stripped they were then overloaded by ultraviolet light which led to a sort of energetic cascade through the neurosystem he said this is why cwd is seen in areas of high uv and something locking up the copper tipped prions

>and did he have evidence
No. And BSE continued after phosmet was phased out. And many other places with high phosmet use had no BSE. He had already been studying organophosphates because of other health concerns when the BSE scare started, so he was just seeing what he wanted to see.

i think it's weird that we still give women HCG injections when they are trying to get pregnant, and they get HCG from the urine of pregnant women. and prions are present in the urine. and they are co-purified with the HCG.
