I've got a masters in chemistry and dropped out of a phd because it is exactly as Sabine says. It's all grant farming, with profs that don't actually care about good results and of course don't do any work. I spent about 2 years doing my professor's work and writing bullshit reports to the EU about work that wasn't being done.
The phd was in pesticide analysis in fully automated farms in the EU and they wanted specific results from that shit so they could make laws. Nobody gave a fuck, from the first meeting they were discussing how to cut up the research so they could re-propose the idea for a later grant.
