Or is it acquired through personal experience -or lack thereof?

What's the genetic factor that's responsible for it? How do you spot it? How do you know that it's not just the hormones in the food, and products disrupting hormonal balance like Aluminum Chlorohydrate in deodorants, BPA in thermal receipts, etc...

Well homos obviously existed before those sorts of shit were even invented, though I would not be surprised if some of that crap does increase the chances of someone going gay, or developing some other mental oddity/illness, sexual or otherwise.
Personally I think people go through a sort of "malleable" phase during the beginning of puberty, as the begin to have sexual interests what they are exposed too shapes how that interests goes. Not just gay/straight either, but also shapes what kind of partners they prefer, or any fetishes they develop. And also that due to some other factors, like genetics or exposure to body alternating chemicals, different people are more "malleable" than others.

I will not claim to know, but I will share some thoughts. I imagine that there probably exists some genuine cases of "crossed wires" when the brain forms. I think upbringing and culture form the majority of cases though. I don't mean to make light of this, but it seems that many sexual abuse victims end up having some type of sexual abnormality. That is an example of upbringing. Culture today seems to allow people to make the choice to be gay. People seem more "go with the flow" and simply let themselves become entangled in the world of alternative sexuality, instead of thinking actively for themselves how they feel. Of course, while most people are heterosexual, the population that is homosexual or otherwise probably fall into one of the categories of reasoning. I am happy to hear some thoughts on other explanations.
