why are we trying to populate mars when we have a perfectly good moon minutes away from earth?
mars is (like the moon) a desolate wasteland except with the added bonus of being the light walking distance of 4 years away!
>there is water on mars
the water is locked in cave chambers miles beneath the surface and frozen.
>there is no water on the moon
thats true however there is water on earth and desalinization along with other materials that can be transported there much more easily then to mars.

>there is no atmosphere on the moon to deflect meteorites travelong 10k per second
this is true however buildings can have a plasma defense system that destroys any incoming objects, likewise mars does not have a very thick atmosphere so living in biodomes is the only suitible option there as well

Mars appears to have a wider variety of raw materials easily accessible in its crust, so less stuff that would need to be imported. Even its thin atmosphere is quite useful; it provides an easy carbon source, which you need for everything from fuel to soil. The day-night cycle on Mars is also a lot more appealing, 25 hours vs two weeks of light and two weeks of darkness. And moon dust is also an absolute abrasive bitch to deal with, since no wind or water movement exist to smooth it out.

Transporting water and other necessary elements to the moon is really expensive. Not practical, /thread

Moon bases and villages in craters, the craters are sealed with very strong material lid roof to prevent meteorites and it is covered in solar panels

Are we actively trying to populate Mars or is that the vague long term goal to justify the current work on getting a human to Mars? I know Musk and others say lots of things but I suspect once a couple of humans have been to Mars, interest in it will quickly wane but the tech developed to make that trip possible will have a long term impact on near Earth projects, including a manned research base on the Moon.

Lunar dirt is incredibly annoying.
RIP door hinges, seals, etc.

If the Moon was flooded, maybe by directing enough icy comets to it, to form oceans, would the water quickly evaporate off into space during the daytime or would that be minimal, taking eons to evaporate away?
