In male prisons, male prisoners often divide themselves into gangs. But in female prisons, female prisoners often form family-like social groups called "pseudo-families". What is the scientific explanation for this gender difference?

Is a prison gang not a pseudo-family? Are they not known for demanding lifetime commitments and whatever?
