🧵 ADHD and math

Anonymous No. 16492230

I'm in my late teens and have average fluid intelligence (107,115) and live with the symptoms of adhd. I never succeeded in school because it was boring. I couldn't focus on doing math because I was easily distracted by my surroundings and I didn't understand the underlying concept of numbers, or so it felt like.

How can I go from second grade math to becoming exceptionally good with the setbacks that I have?

For high school level math, working memory is actually more important. How’s your working memory?

Bad, I have to count with my fingers when doing mental multiplication. Partly due to not fully learning the times table, but I'm pretty sure even a person who doesn't know the times table can count and subtract faster and more efficiently.

This is your problem. Working memory. You need to learn how to externalize certain cognitive functions that come naturally to people who don’t have adhd.

When it comes to math, you need more time alotted. Do you have an individual education plan or the equivalent in your country ?
You can learn to memorize times tables at any age, doing this would increase your confidence.

Beyond this, I would advise not pursuing a career that will require a lot of mathematical ability. There are lots out there.

You are intelligent, you will find your place.
The worst thing you can do is develop a defeatist attitude. It’s easy to do when you have working memory issues because you tend to be more prone to rigid thinking, so you need to be aware of your own thought patterns.

Look into a book called Mindset by Carol Dwek. It’s a game changer. You must develop a growth mindset so that you don’t allow yourself to give up to easily.
You have genuine challenges but there are effective tools out there, you just have to find them.

You’ll be okay op, don’t be hard on yourself.

Also, you should be treating your adhd with appropriate meds such as adderal or vyvanse. Are you doing that ?

Your issue isn’t ’intelligence’ it’s executive functioning. That’s what you need to look into.

I was advised adhd medicine in elementary school by a teacher. I never got to take any because my parents were against it, they still are to this day. Are they really that life changing? Dependency on amphetamine even in small doses does sound very risky.

Meditate (specifically "noting"mediation were you notice things, eventually youll be able to notice when get distracted or impulsive and force your mind back to whatever youre looking at). Also do visualing mediatation (it will help with high level stuff).

I'll just stare at a blank wall for 1 hour and use my visual memory to entertain myself, maybe this will decrease my inattentiveness.
