Why do physicists piss and jizz themselves over this stupid experiment? It’s just light on a screen. Who gives a shit?

it's a stuperposition of spoopy and kewl

Hey how are You, and Who are You? So I can fathom Your post question, which I can relate to before this reply

No actual working physicist gives a shit. It’s only something that’s ever brought up by undergrads, schizos and popsci channels.

Optimistic of you to think undergrads care about anything academic beyond getting a degree as fast as possible. It’s always the professors sperging out over this. Or the textbooks, even - hyping it up by saying shit like it’s “the most remarkable discovery in centuries” or whatever. Meanwhile students are too busy staring at their phones for it to register (guilty).

the only people pissing themselves of this arent physicists.

The classical double slit you have shown is not the interesting part, it's what happens when the input is decreased to one single electron or photon at at time. In this case you still see the fringes on the screen, even though there are no other particles to interfere with. The particle is interfering with itself, this has no classical explanation.

OK, and? Who the fuck cares about this nerd shit?

The point is that if you lower the intensity you get little blips on the screen as though the individual photons are particle-like. And moreover you can do the experiment with things like electrons rather than light. So matter has both particle and wave-like properties and doesn't act like strictly one or the other. That's the gist of it.

physicists piss themselves over the double-slit experiment because it destroys their comfy materialist worldview. It shows light—and by extension, reality foesn’t behave like solid, predictable 'stuff.' It acts like a wave when you’re not looking, and like a particle when you are.

This isn’t just 'light on a screen'; it’s proof that observation shapes reality itself. Dualists were right all along: the mind and the material world are intertwined. Meanwhile, physicists are coping because their 'everything is just particles' model can’t explain it

Wave-particle duality and discreteness of physical properties are the two starting points for all of the quantum physics we apply in technology today.

Is there a particular reason why schizo threads seem to be more and more common here?

You must have gone to a shitty school, because the only ones who behaved like this in mine were filtered out of the physics major.
