How is the incoming Trump administration going to affect and change science? Since the government provides pretty much all funding for science it seems like he has the potential to alter things substantially. Which fields will benefit and which will suffer under his watch?

Everything will get worse. Just like when Biden's administration started. Just like when Trump's first administration started. Just like when Obama's administration started before that, and so on.
Things are only going to keep getting worse. The only thing that will change are the superficial details and the excuses for why.

I think the old sponsored private research system is better than our publicly funded system.
private system
>hello patron, what have you discovered?
>nothing!
>well get the fuck out
public system
>how many papers have you written this year? how many citations did they get?
>oh, 12? 74? good numbers, keep it up, here's your $200,000, see you next year
>I expect another book in a few years too, don't slack off

private system
>hello patron, can you do me a favor and make this research here.
>this is the result I want it to have, I will give you $500,000 if you can manage this result.
>no? well get the fuck out
public system
>Im afraif we can only extend your employment contract by two years again
>yeah, thats pretty annoying that the bank wont give you a credit because of this and you cant buy a house for your senpai
>here's your $80,000, no we cant pay you what private industries is willing to pay
>and you need to make more out of this 2000ish lab equipment, we cant afford something new

Trump hates science. He is going deport all male scientists and imprison all female scientists in concentration camps where they will be forced to give birth to powerful white men.

Well, he supposedly will have Elon and Vivek in charge of eliminating government "waste." Perhaps these guys will be sympathetic to science, but I have to imagine fundamental research is an easy target for cost cutting, whereas other expenditures in the federal government are more difficult to get rid of without political implications.

Maybe NASA can get back to doing science and NOT be obsessed with DEI Astronauts.

>$80K
I fucking wish. Even most of the R1 schools won't pay early career guys more than $60-65K.
