Do we know what the earliest homo sapiens looked like? Media depicts them according to the phenotypes of modern populations of the concerned geographic region, but that may be like thinking the first dogs looked like labradors and great danes

No they didn't, the African phenotype is the result of Humans moving to Africa and then interbreeding with gorillas and chimpanzees. Humans evolved in Europe and they looked like Vikings.
