I doubt population numbers are cooked. That's kind of hard to do. Traditionally, having a higher population is viewed as a strength. Nations might want to lie about that in order to appear stronger but intelligence agencies can make guesses based on farming capacity and food imports as to how many people a nation is housing. GDP is much easier to fabricate and a few nations do that.
Governments are very hesitant to discredit each other, as they all know that sabotaging confidence in another nation is also self-sabotage with their own reputation. That gets people thinking.

Anyways, there's a few competing schools of thought about overpopulation. There's "cornucopians" that think supplies are endless for ever more people, and if not then technology will find a way. There's also end-of-world doomsayers and their positions may actually be more reasonable. These worldviews are drawn on right and left political lines in the USA respectively.

Eventually there might be a change of rhetoric where more unskilled laborers are seen as a liability but right now that's not the case. Beware technology changing your way of life, often it takes a lifetime to see the benefits reaped while the costs are paid in advance.

Im really not even positive the rest of the world is real, or space is real. It could just be me sitting here in my little simulated truman show.
