No mumbo jumbo in this one. Polarizer 2 doesn't just "dim" the light. It produces light linearly polarized in its direction, rotated from the first one. (As a side effect the amount of energy from 1 that comes perpendicular to 2's direction of polarization doesn't get through thus dimming). The new rotated polarized light comes to 3, not perpendicular now so part of it also gets through.
