The sun is an electro-magnetic emitter. It excites the noble gases in the air. When the sun is close, the gas will appear blue. When the EM energy is lower, it can be red, orange and other colors. This is all reproducible in a lab with various noble gases. That's why you can see the sky transition from blue to black from a high-altitude camera. Those gases simply don't exist higher in the atmosphere.
