๐Ÿงต Can capitalism save the world?

Anonymous No. 16582593

Why can't we strap some rockets in the 2032 asteroid so it gets captured by moon gravity and orbits the earth and we simply start mining it with robots?

Why can't you?

Imagine you have a perfectly beautiful little tree - the leaves provide shade for the grasses beneath it, which provide shade to the bacteria in the soil, keeping the soil alive; the trunk and branches of the tree provide shelter to many species of small mammals, insects, birds, all of which have their own niches and functions; the roots of the tree absorb rain and moisture, keeping the ground from drying out and eroding, they share nutrients with other trees and with mycelium that spreads throughout the forest. The leaves of the tree, it's fruit, if it has any, it's bark, the grasses around it and the moisture in the soil provide food and sustenance to many more species, anything from deer to aphids, which then also provide food to predatorial species, in turn preventing the trees from being eaten.
Capitalism is when you cut that tree down to get land and wood, which you will use to build a house that will decay in 50 years, so that we can house more of ourselves;
When we practice agriculture where the tree used to stand so that we can make more of ourselves, which will degrade the area until it erodes away and becomes desert;
When we kill all of the animals that lived there so we can make more of ourselves.
It's when you do all of these things and then scratch your head when the world has turned into an overcrowded desert and think: "How could I not have access to food, shelter, clothing, clean air or water, when I'm a millionaire?"
Why does it have to be this way, you ask? Because short-term profits are more certain and therefore more valuable than long-term profits.
And so we consume and deplete the planet, hoping that space aliens or Jesus Christ will come down from the sky to save us from ourselves once it is unrecoverably dead.

why mine it in space? makes more sense to send it in some shallow water and go collect it. break it up in smaller chunks so no damage. simpler and cheaper overall. you'd still need to send that shit down after you mine it.

Fuck asteroid 2032, go get Davida

As per your question I imagine some people aren't ready to crash the economy? I'm not certain but some asteroids would cause some pretty amazing upheavals in the rare ore markets.

is there anything on it worth the 50 thousand dollars per gram of mining expenses, or can we maybe obtain that same materiel locally here on earth for far less investment?

You need way to omuch delta v to get it into lunar gravity and also a lot of delta v to put it into an earth centered orbit (in a Lagrange point, perhaps?)

as long as humans are required for work they have to be forced to do it. that can only happen two ways, you risk dying with no shelter or food, or you work at gun point. there's no amount of riches in the universe that would change that. somebody gotta go for the resources, process them, and make all the shit we all need. let alone any entertainment and what have you.
