๐งต Why is chemistry not as respected as other fields of science?
Anonymous at Tue, 11 Feb 2025 23:38:40 UTC No. 16583201
This is simply based off of my own experience, but I figured I would ask it anyways. When compared to other fields of science such as physics, biology and even psychology chemistry seemingly is often overlooked unless it is being applied to another field. Even in some cases where chemistry is actively being applied, it is often overlooked (chemical engineers being paid very little and having a very narrow job market). From what I have gathered, most people just dont respect chemists and think "oh, he has a chemistry degree, he's going to be a high-school science teacher".
Why is this? Or have I just been mislead? I have found that in order to actually "be good at chemistry" you have to go into a field that isnt chemistry.

>physics
Sure.
>biology
Theyre not, Biology could mean like a Zoologist or some dumb shit...mf zoo keeper, Sea World worker. Dolphin feeder, shit sweeper.
>psychology chemistry
Psychiatry? Borderline quackery these days. Pharmacologist? Its a cover for narcotics manufacturer.

I'd almost agree (as an outsider but my works touch on tangent fields), that something like Mathematics (Geometric), Physics (Quantum Mechanical), CompSci (Computational/Theoretical), etc.
That a good minor can make a great major.

Also I thought you said you never post anonymously, for the same reason, because you are confident you are right.

no lmao, i could see how psychology chemistry could be interpreted as psychiatry. I just was typing too quick.

Speaking as a non-scientist but have several good friends working in different fields, I think a big portion of reputation is also compensation/the nature of work actually being done in a field, not just the theory and advancements currently being made in it. Chemists I know have some pretty fucking shit and unpleasant jobs, and the ratio of competitiveness:compensation can be outright miserable at times, even when compared to other fields. You don't get into science to become wealthy, but you DEFINITELY don't become a chemist for it.

the golden years of chemistry are long gone. there's nothing cool left to discover.

Because chemistry is at a dead end. There's no new discoveries in chemistry. We discovered all the elements that can be discovered on earth. I mean what's next?
Now there's probably more outside our solar system but who knows.

What about new compounds, biochemical discoveries, materials science etc? There's surely a lot to be done there that falls under the field of chemistry, am I wrong?

1. As hobby/non-academic field was regulated to death, even without those regulations it's a hard and expensive field
2. Dependence in Academics or Industry
3. Bad PR during the last decades
4. Chemistry is about altering matter, nobody cares about your new coating or compound for a very particular industry.
EE is similar in some regards, except for meme fields like anthropomorphic robotics.

nothing as revolutionary as in the 1800/1900s. wow, they made another antidepressant! they were able to increase the efficiency of this commonly performed industrial reaction by 1.2%! this stealth coating for the F35 decreases the RCS by 20%! boring to most people
