Not sure where to ask, so I figured /sci/ could help. Any opinions on the Swift SW380B? I plan to get one with a 5 megapixel camera that goes in the eyepiece slot, and using it connected to my laptop or phone. I've used college lab microscopes for a couple years when I got my associate's degree, and I just want something for hobbyist use at home. I have no idea what brands I used in college, but I know this one has an abbe condenser. A camera that hooks to phone/computer would make it cool too.

Of course I'll be getting emission oil, dyes, and some accessories separately. I thought about getting the tripod version as well so a camera can hook in without interfering with the binoculars, but it's like an extra 100 bucks that doesn't seem like a huge change in convenience.

All microscopes that aren't cheap chink shit, from a reputable brand, are basically the same. Get the trinocular though, that way the camera can stay permanently attached on your work station, just slip the dust cover over the wire.

Any swift offered will do everything your high school and college lab microscopes did and more.

A good, high quality microscope typically starts at 1k. If you mostly want to look at microbes/bugs/plants then go ahead. If you want something inexpensive that you can pass to your kids and get them interested in life sciences, it's perfect. If you want to use it for bacteria photography, you may be disappointed in the quality. Not that you'll see any new details under a different compound microscope (unless you get into phase contrast or infinity correction) but the image quality for photography will be much different, especially so for exposure shots.

Get microscope with third eye, and place DLSR there, you'd get much better pictures.
