🧵 Mnemotic Devices For Math

Anonymous No. 16617346

post any funny or useful mnemotic devices you used while you were learning math.

>bonus points i desperately need help for my precal exam this friday
anons are there any acronyms or ditties that helped you remember all the different trig identities they'd be much appreciated.
>inb4 just memorize it retard
i'm sure this shit will become intuitive and second nature in time, but i need to cram this into my head immediately

Dunno if this is dangerous

But you can make memories permanent by aplying kinetic triggers

Has issues though you know with modern kinetic sources, mainly real ambient electricity

I had my friend narrate some trig identities and I put it together with some fart music in Ableton the day before a test. That was 2.5 years ago and I haven't forgotten any of this.

The only one I know for math is SOHCAHTOA.
Sin=Opposite/hypotenuse; cosine=adjacent/hypotenuse, so on.
I always used Penis In Vagina for P=IV though

Pic related plus the sign of the circular functions on each of the four quadrants plus a couple of identities is all you'll ever need for exact trigonometry of right triangles

I had to memorize this stuff in a short time and I knew that I had to make it enjoyable. So, I made this and listened to it on loop on all of my car rides until the test. I got an A iirc. There's no more, sorry.

You don't need mnemonics for math, the mnemonics is solving problems. Mnemonics are for fields like bio where you have to memorize a bunch of facts, many of which you won't be using on a regular basis.

>>16617382 for example is stupid to memorize, just do enough problems involving trig that it becomes second nature. Are you one of those kids that unironically memorized the multiplication table, too?

You should already know at this point
- the Pythagorean theorem
- the side ratios in 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles
- what even and odd functions are and what their graphs look like
- how the graphs of y=f(x)+a, y=af(x), y=f(x+a), and y=f(ax) can be obtained by transformations of y=f(x)
You should memorize
sin(A+B) = sin(A) cos(B) + cos(A) sin(B)
and
cos(A+B) = cos(A) cos(B) - sin(A) sin(B).
You need to know what the graphs of the sine, cosine, and tangent functions look like.
You need to understand that sine, cosine, and tangent mean y, x, and slope.
You need to remember which reciprocal function is the reciprocal of what.
Don't waste time memorizing shit if you can work it out in a few seconds from the important stuff. Examples of things you don't need to memorize: formulas for sin(A-B), cos(A-B), sin(2A), cos(2A).
Understand how to derive most of the identities so you aren't fucked if you forget them.

I never understood the point of mnemonics. It's just doubling the amount of things you need to remember, as well as making it less concise.

Need to multiply by 5 in your head?
Add a zero to the current number, then divide that by 2.

>i.e.
> x * 5 = (x * 10) / 2

Been using that mental shortcut since I figured it out at age 10 or so.

Another one that has two applications:
(1) if you're grouping a bunch of terms together for multiplication or addition and are having trouble keeping track of if a grouped term should have a minus sign or not,
(2) if you're negating a logical statement multiple times (applies to programming too, the NOT or negation operator, !)
>odd number of minus signs remains minus
>even number of minus signs becomes positive

look up the Mathemagician (NOT the "Math Sorecer") on youtube. He gives talks on mental arithmetic n mental computatjon tricks

Algebraic geometry could start earlier. 345 triangles and trig identities are just exercises. The transversal angle puzzle is a bit odd because it doesn't recruit the mental image rotation functionality.

I compute 6*9 with fingers: I put finger 6 down and see a group of 5 and a group of 4. x*9=10x-x might have been better.
