๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ ๐Ÿงต Why didn't academia write this paper?

With trillion dollar endowment funds, political support, and a fully supportive media chorus making a media circus about every fake battery eating bacteria that cures cancer, the universities still failed to find the most important result of the century.

I would call an elite R&D group that works very closely with both Stanford and Cambridge to be pretty "academic."

At those levels, the difference between the paper being published by academia, a private R&D group or a government agency becomes largely a formality. All of the major academic research in this area is funded by government or corporate firms anyways, so what is the real difference between if the PI has a .edu email or whether the .edu email is later on this list?

Academia is for un-monetizable knowledge.
The good stuff goes to the private sector.

DESU I've been in prestigious research labs in the ML space at universities and interacted with FAANG ML research labs. The main difference between the two is funding. Lots of professors will do a little stint in a FAANG lab early on to make their bones and then switch to a university when they want to slow down. Lots of people bounce back and fourth. It's kind of two sides of the same coin. University of Toronto has a guy on this paper. UoT also has most of the people who invented neural ODE's, the mechanism underlying modern diffusion models. Graph neural network research has largely being spearheaded by stanford labs, with Yale having an up and coming stake in that game.
