There’s a star that shouldn't exist. WR 104, a Wolf-Rayet star located about 8,000 light-years away, is a massive star that’s nearing the end of its life.
What makes it truly bizarre is its spiral shape—a rare phenomenon caused by the star’s intense winds and the fact that it’s part of a binary system. As it spins, it creates a spiral-shaped structure of gas and dust around it, which is unlike any other star system we’ve seen.
But what’s most intriguing about WR 104 is the possibility that it could explode into a gamma-ray burst when it collapses into a supernova. If this happens, it could unleash a burst of energy so powerful that it would outshine the rest of the galaxy and potentially harm life on Earth if we’re in the wrong direction. The star is positioned perfectly for this to happen—creating an eerie sense of danger in this cosmic anomaly.
This unusual spiral structure and potential for a devastating explosion make WR 104 one of the most peculiar and dangerous stars in our galaxy.

The atmosphere protects us from most of the direct GRB effects. The worst thing that can happen is the Earth's ozone layer gets screwed up for a few years. This lets in more UV which can wipe out the phytoplankton which generate most of our oxygen. That sounds bad but it's pretty much a nothingburger for a technological civilization (like us) to deal with.

all stars spin, only shooting stars break the mold.
