In my experience yes, but then again I have Asperger's and a hint of ADHD, so exercising this really particularly stimulates aspects of memory and focus that are problematic for me and most people like me.

Generally speaking N-back does seem to increase density and signalling in brain areas associated with that kind of information processing, particularly in DLPFC and dACC. In the ACC specifically over time with N-back training the excitatory potential increases while the glucose consumption decreases, suggesting not only an increase in resource allocation and signalling, but also optimization of signalling and resource use in those areas.

The effect size is so small and probably confounded by things like 'the group that did n-back is more motivated on the IQ test because they've been doing n-back everyday for weeks'

getting more sleep, working out, taking creatine, and studying are probably more effective interventions

I think you need to get to higher n-backs (>5) for a better effect while also trying not to use too many mnemonic techniques. The brain training google group has a decent amount of people still playing around with it semi-seriously as a hobby if you want more information.
