I'm not a /sci/ guy, just a curious dude, so, what are our odds of actually getting off of Earth and actually colonizing another star system?

Anonymous No. 16621975

right now? pretty low, we'd need to learn how to construct things in space first. there's a pretty good overview of near-existing technology for this purpose in Isaac Arthur's crawlonizing the galaxy youtube video. I'd link it but I'm not a shill, do your own damn homework

We don't deserve to go to space. We have to fix the microplastics first.

I'm not particularly optimistic about "colonizing the stars." I think we probably will have some level of (at least) scientific construction on Mars with some level of people temporarily living there for periods of time (similar to a more extreme equivalent of what we do now with the antarctic research bases or the ISS). Though, given the serious health consequences for people who spend significant amounts of time in a lower gravity state, we'd need some good way to prevent bone mass degradation. Mars's gravity isn't that much different than ours, but it's different enough that human beings would probably experience osteopenia/osteoporosis at a significantly higher rate after a few years being there (even if we solve the "how do we get them food, oxygen and water" problem).

Will we actually have human beings living permanently off world and out of our solar system? Unless we find a solar system that is able to be traveled to within one human lifetime and some capacity to have automated construction long distance, I don't think it will happen.

What do you mean? Do you also think it's over because eventually there will be a heat death of the universe?

All things must come to an end. We can still have an incredible reign as kings of Earth even if our kingdom one day will fall.

I think the way our politics, economics, and social situations are going down here, we'll snuff ourself out long before we get the chance. A species with less selfish individuals might have made from where we are now in a few thousand years. Maybe less if they discovered something wild like negative mass matter which could be used for an Alcubierre drive as sort of a way to get from A to B faster than light without ever technically "moving" at faster than the speed of light

There's some video games or fantasy novels that might help with your aims. If you think you're some protagonist from a sci-fi novel/game, I'd recommend you seek counseling for your delusions of grandeur.
