Would it be possible to pull airplanes out of the sky with a giant electromagnet like in John Carter? How much would it cost to build?

So a giant magnet wouldn't do shit?

They actully built a couple and tested in the early 2000s but the damage from planes crashing into the towers was more than expected so the idea was scrapped.

so you set it up on the back of a truck for mobility and lurk at unsuspecting airports
Don't catch planes on takeoff though, they weigh more than the truck and might carry the truck away

The airplane's power is higher when it is light, not when it is heaviest.

A superconducting power storage was proposed a few decades ago, using a powerful solenoid. A quick calculation showed it would suck in cars from 1 km away, in a really bad way. So yes, it could work, though it relies on the aircraft being of a magnetic material. The compass would die early and warn pilots though.

just need some decent anchors to the ground, shouldn't be hard.

Even if non-magnetic, the planes are generally made of conducting materials so I imagine they'd rather "get stuck" in the air due to eddy currents and related forces generated in their body

While we're at it we could make the solenoid really long (really, really) and check if charge is quantized.
