new paper claims you can harvest energy from Earth's rotation
discuss the practical implications of this discovery

I had an idea to generate energy from atmospheric pressure differentials but nobody wanted to read the paper I didn't publish about it

Sounds like a bad idea. Removing energy from Earth's rotation to run machines and whatnot would result in Earth's rotation slowing. Not a big deal if one guy is running a microwave, but if you have billions of people tapping this energy constantly over 100s of years it could have unintended consequences.

If you do the math, the amount of energy we use comes out to something like half a second of the Earth's rotation by the time the Sun turns into a Red Giant.

Show me the math then? Let's say the entire planet's current energy needs are met by harvesting Earth's rotational energy. How much is lost by red giant phase then?

the paper literally says that if all of our current energy consumption came from Earth's rotational energy, the effect would be negligible

Yea what this >>16636103 cat is saying is legit.
For now, it's negligible, but the problem is nobody scales it up. What would happen if everyone who uses energy had this kind of access?
A good way to think about this is what we've seen happen when superconductors have lost their conductivity.
Earth's inner core, which produces the magnetic field we rely on, losing it's conductivity when faced with the magnetic field being generated through consumption, would doom the planet. Maybe not anytime soon, nor even in a hundred lifetimes.

sapping earth's rotational energy wouldn't alter earth's orbit. it would just make days and nights longer so everything would get cooked during the day and freeze during night (which would be very based.)
