🧵 Nuclear Energy Thread

Anonymous No. 16636299

Lets discus nuclear electricity generation.

I wondered recently if the economics of US nuclear energy are distorted by purchasing surplus enriched uranium from Russia for decades? USG closed or privatized much of the domestic nuclear fuel enrichment.

Economics of nuclear aren't dependent on the price of fuel, the uranium could be teleported into the reactors by god for the price of a single foreskin and they would not make economic sense as they currently stand.

Michigan is months away from restarting their Palisades nuclear plant. Biden provided loan guarantees and other support to get the plant in condition for operation while Trump freed up $1.3 billion for co-ops to buy electricity from the plant. The plant still needs NRC approval to restart generation and sale of electricity from the plant.

I wonder if it has to do with all the red tape and renewable lobbyists…

I wonder if fixing old plants will further delay new reactor research.

Probably not. There's a very limited number of mothballed nuclear reactors and only a small fraction of them are suitable to be restarted. While the Michigan plant will negate the threats of Doug Ford to cut off 1% of Michigan's electricity, on a nationwide basis, Palisades and Three Mile Island are insignificant contributors to the grid. More plants will be needed.

The economics of nuclear depend a lot more on siting concerns than anyone likes to discuss

Red tape has never stopped a profitable industry before, coal is just objectively evil way of making power and everyone has known this for hundred+ years and it's still chugging along because it has been profitable and it's only losing ground because it can no longer compete in price with renewables or gas. Being profitable enough to lobby your way to good regulation is how industry survives. If your business can't lobby then it's not financially sustainable so that's just cope again.

Coal made a lot of money powering uranium enrichment for decades. The Tennessee Valley Authority had 3000 megawatts of coal power going to just one enrichment facility.

coal is “an objectively evil way” in your brainwashed retarded head because that’s the current thing. It was considered “the objectively good way” two hundred years ago. Fossil fuels don’t care about your feelings, all they have is energy density and byproducts.

Rich people have never lived downwind from a coal power plant for a reason, in fact no one did unless they had no other option. It was tolerated because of how much money it made.
