šļø š§µ The black-white IQ disparity: a short overview
Anonymous at Sat, 15 Jun 2024 16:47:55 UTC No. 16236489
There is an IQ gap present among black and white Americans, and because of the lack of research between what could be done to mediate the gap, it seems like it will always persisted. Once you adjust for SES (socioeconomic situation) and IQ, the crime rate and financial outcome disparity disappears almost completely.
It is currently taboo to suggest that the gap is partially due to genetic reasons, as people in general like to believe that they can overcome any disparity through hard work and ambition. What they don't like to believe is that there are immediable differences because of factors completely out of their control. However, the majority of research that is done carefully keeps arriving to the conclusion that the intelligence gap is partially due to a genetic component.
One such is the meta study ' Thirty years of research on race differences in cognitive ability.': https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2005
Another piece of evidence would be the SAT (which practically dubs for an iq test) scores among black and white students, adjusted for SES. As predicted in the meta study, the IQ gap between black and white students fall about 5 points when adjusted for SES, but the difference between the two groups still is extremely noticeable.
As research into the IQ's of different races start becoming taboo, we as a society will not be able to discover any methods to mediate this gap.

Geeks miss the forest for the trees when discussing nuclear power. The spend so much time bleating about the energy density of uranium they miss out on every other aspect of nuclear power and why it is terrible.
The real reason it won't work is because of the cost. We already tried back during the oil embargo and couldn't get nuclear off the ground.

š§µ Filling the Gaza tunnels with gas
Anonymous at Sat, 15 Jun 2024 15:39:53 UTC No. 16236395
Israel is under much critical scrutiny for bombing Gaza. Hamas members hide in the tunnels underneath the civilian population. It strikes me that a bomb is probably not the best weapon in this case, neither for targeting Hamas nor for avoiding civilian casualties.
What about gas? While some kind of toxic gas is possible, an easier option might be something abundant like CO2. CO2 is heavier than O2, so if you pumped a bunch of it into the tunnels it would presumably sink to the bottom, right? Would it be possible for the IDF to just find as many tunnel entrances as they can and pump in CO2 (or some other cheap/abundant gas)? The tunnel network is vast- I have heard estimates that they stretch for about 500 km. Let's assume the estimates for width and height of the tunnels are 5 m x 5 m. Then the total volume of the entire tunnel network would be 500,000*5*5 = 12.5 million cubic meters. Would it be technically feasible to fill the tunnels with some kind of gas that would either poison or suffocate the millitants inside?
Since this is /sci/, I would like to keep the focus of this thread on the technical feasibility (or infeasibility) of the proposal, rather than on politics or military strategy.
š§µ Graph theory help
Anonymous at Sat, 15 Jun 2024 15:00:20 UTC No. 16236378
Hi /sci/, I'm writing a joke paper on Terrence Howard's paper about how 1x1=2, and I need some help with a section. For the paper, in section 2.1.2, I'm trying to get into some amount of detail about how the amount of colored edges changes with respect to however many more shapes are connected to any combination of shapes. Is there any resource anywhere that can help me with that? I'm looking through "Graph Theory and Its Applications" by Gross right now but I think this is closer to combinatorics than anything. But I have no clue.

I've been playing with a bunch of tiny magnets, and what strikes me about them is how they're very much like atoms are described, push, pull, stable, unstable in different configurations. Then I start thinking about why mass equals energy and such, and it seems like there is some very basic stuff that's on the tip of my tongue about how this stuff works that really we should have figured out a long time ago. Einstein just thought about stuff. That's what people need to do.
Even if this is not the core of existence. There is some logic to this too. When we figure it out people are gonna be like āyeah no shit that's how it works Sherlock.ā
