How in the world did early humans realize they could take specific kinds of rock (malachite, etc) and melt them down into metals like copper and tin? Which, mind you, only works at very high temperatures. Is it really assumed some sucker just sat his entire life melting every rock type possible in a fire as hot as possible to see the outcome?

🧵 Is it worth putting effort into math?

I get straight C's in math - I don't really take the subject seriously, but I'm not sure if it's worth doing the work (doing the problem sets/exam practice we are given) since I don't know if I'll see any noticeable improvement using them.
So I'd like to ask, is doing practice problems a good way to improve at math, and is it worth putting in the effort to be good at math if you're starting from this low?

🗑️ 🧵 Trying to make a taxonomical tree of anime girls
Anonymous at Tue, 11 Mar 2025 19:44:25 UTC No. 16616036
I need some antropology nerds help.
I'm trying to write an anime girl racial taxonomical tree, using common phentoypes from anime and IRL ethnicities.
But I have an issue.
I can't not longer use real life as source.
I need basically to stop using real life as 100% guide.
Because I can't just not longer separate easily races by easy stuff like hair types and hair colors.
Not a single color trait is unique to a single racial group.
There's red ginger populations in central asia (ugyurs), europe (irish), asian (samoans), black (himbas).
There's blonde populations in europe (germans), siberia (slavs), asia (hmong), melanesia (solomon islands).
There's also green eyes in populations in persian, saudi arabia, southern europe, central asia populations.
Blue eyes are also a germanic and slav trait, but there's isolate patches of blue eyes in some africans and other places like middle easterners.
Albinos are also a population that is found in negroids, mongoloids and caucasoids.
So I need a better taxonomical system than one that tries to follow real life.
I also need to include fantasy phenotypes like pink hair from chibi usa and madoka, and blue and green hair.
What I think It could be a solution would be a 2D grid where one axis is hair type + skin color + eye shape (tsurime/tareme).
And the other axis being hair and eye color.
But how would a 2D axis grid fit nicelly into a taxonomy geneaology tree?

Hey /sci/, I’m struggling with electrodynamics—Maxwell’s equations, vector fields, all that fun stuff. I get the basic concepts, but when it comes to actually solving problems, everything just falls apart. I go through the textbook, do problem sets, and even rederive things from first principles, but a few days later, it’s like my brain wiped the slate clean.
How do you guys actually retain and apply this stuff? Any study strategies that go beyond just brute-force memorization?
I’ve tried active recall, spaced repetition, and watching lecture vids, but I still feel like I’m not fully internalizing it. I even started using a flashcard app https://flashcards.ai to drill vector identities and boundary conditions, which helps a LOT, but I’m still struggling with actually thinking in terms of the equations rather than just solving mechanically.
Anyone else hit this wall? What worked for you?
