Check his lineage, see if he's actually endorsed by his teacher. If he's legit you'll be able to trace to Helio at the very least, and can probably send an e-mail to his teacher. If he's really legit, his teacher will have a Wikipedia page.

Depends on where you live. If you're in the middle of bumfuck nowhere there's a stronger possibility your teacher won't have lineage that can be traced back to a Gracie but in big cities, especially NYC or LA/SoCal you should definitely be able to find an instructor who was. I live in greater LA and there are three BJJ gyms within 5m driving distance of my house, one is a Machado gym and the other two have main instructors who are either black belts under a Gracie directly or once removed. There's also a 10th Planet like 10m away.
