i know sikhs hate him because hes "an hindu nationalist \shiva worshipper" but i dunno about his credentials in ancient martial art systems

Actual Sikhs seem to regard him as fake. Gatka is a real art but seems to have been lost to a large degree as it was forced to become ceremonial by the British colonial authorities. It's still probably worth doing if you are ethnically North Indian/Pakistani/Bengali but you'd have to cross train it with living/reconstructed alive combat lineages (HEMA or FMA for weapons, and Muay Thai for unarmed) to be effective. Most Sikh gurdwaras offer it as a class prob best to go with Punjabi friends of you're not one of them.
